Outdoor court and hoop at Bellevue Beach Park

LOCATIONS

Three courts, all outdoor, on purpose

Bellevue Beach Park, a public court in Newport, and Swope. No rented gym time, no indoor backup, no facility fee buried in the session price.

01 / THE COURTS

Where does training actually happen?

Three outdoor public courts and nothing else. Bellevue Beach Park in Bellevue, a public court in Newport, and Swope. All three sit close together near the river, which is why families across Northern Kentucky can reach one of them without a long drive.

Outdoor is a choice, not a budget constraint. The published consensus on early sport specialization from AOSSM reports a greater than 2 to 1 increase in injury rate when organized play displaces free play, and notes that 88% of Olympians played more than one sport as children. Source: AOSSM consensus statement. Public courts are where free play happens. Training in the same place a kid can come back to alone on a Tuesday, with a ball and no supervision, is the point rather than an accident.

There is also a practical argument. Outdoor rims are stiffer, the surface is uneven and the wind is real. A shot that only works in still air under a controlled ceiling is a shot that has not been tested. A handle that only works on a polished floor is not a handle. Players who train outdoors tend to be unbothered by whatever gym they walk into, because the gym is easier than what they are used to.

Weather is the obvious cost. Sessions are checked against the forecast ahead of time and rescheduled early rather than late, so nobody drives across the river to stand in a car park. Winter and heavy rain periods mean a plan gets built around the calendar, with more work assigned for the player to do on their own between sessions. That work matters anyway. The session is where a correction is made, and the repetitions that make it permanent happen on the player's own time.

Families travel in from across Northern Kentucky. The town pages cover what the drive and the nearest court look like from each: Bellevue, Newport, Fort Thomas, Covington, Dayton, Highland Heights, Cold Spring, Alexandria and Florence. Session cost is $200 wherever the work happens.

02 / PRACTICAL

What to know before the first session

  • 01

    Pick the closest court

Bellevue Beach Park in Bellevue, a public court in Newport, or Swope. Which one gets used is normally decided by whichever is shortest for the family, not by any difference in the work.

  • 02

    Bring outdoor shoes

Concrete eats indoor soles. A pair that is already retired from the school season is the right call, along with water, because there is no concession stand waiting.

  • 03

    Expect a weather call

Forecast is checked before the session and a reschedule goes out early. Nothing is run in rain or on a wet surface, which is a footing issue rather than a comfort one.

  • 04

    Plan around the calendar

Outdoor means the heavy building blocks fall in the warmer months and in-season work is lighter and more targeted. Players get repetitions to do between sessions so winter is not a dead stretch.
