01 / TRAINING IN NEWPORT
How do I get my son or daughter ready for high school tryouts in Newport?
Start early and train the things a coach can see inside twenty minutes: handle under pressure, a shot that repeats, footwork, and decisions made at speed. Alex Grant works on exactly those at an outdoor court in Newport, $200 a session, with a plan written for that one player.
Newport is unusual. Newport High School and Newport Central Catholic sit inside the same small city, so kids grow up knowing which gym they want to end up in, and knowing who they are competing with for the last spots. That pressure is useful, but only if a player does something about it between seasons. Most do not. Most play games and count that as work.
What actually separates a player who makes a jump is boring and repeatable. Hundreds of reps on a small number of moves, then those moves used against a defender who is genuinely trying to stop them. Alex builds that second half on purpose. A move a player can do perfectly with nobody guarding is not finished until they can do it late, tired, and with a defender in their chest.

What Newport families ask about
- 01
Two programs, one city
Players from Newport High School and Newport Central Catholic both train here, and both face the same math: the roster spot goes to whoever improved over the summer.
- 02
Small group work
Two or three players who compete with each other can share a session. It changes the drills, because live defenders make the reads real, and it changes the cost per player.
- 03
The off season does the work
June through August is when a player changes. In season, sessions get narrower and target the one or two things a high school coach is asking for right now.
05 / Questions
What families in Newport ask
What age do you start with?
Middle school upward is where the work sticks, roughly fifth or sixth grade and older. Younger than that, a kid is better served playing a lot, in any setting, and getting comfortable with the ball. Alex has coached at middle school, high school and college level, so he can tell you honestly whether a nine year old needs paid training yet. Usually the answer is no.
Do you offer packages instead of single sessions?
Yes. A single session is $200. Packages exist for players training on a regular weekly schedule, and that pricing gets handled in conversation rather than listed here, because it depends on how many sessions are booked and how many players share the court. Ask and you get a straight number the first time you speak to him.
Can two players share one session?
Yes, and for a lot of drills it works better. Live reads need somebody to read. Two players who push each other get more out of an hour than one player working against air. Groups stay small on purpose, because the moment a player is standing in a line waiting for a rep, that part of the hour is gone.
