01 / TRAINING IN FORT THOMAS

Is there a basketball trainer near Fort Thomas, KY?

Yes. Alex Grant trains Fort Thomas players at outdoor courts in Bellevue and Newport, both a short drive north, and at Swope. Sessions are $200, one on one or small group. He has eight years coaching middle school, high school and college basketball and played three years in college as a team captain.

Fort Thomas has the opposite problem from the small river towns. Highlands High School is a deep program, and a talented kid can spend two years behind somebody a year older. Parents here almost never ask how to make their child good enough to play basketball. They ask how to make their child good enough to get on the floor.

The answer is usually narrower than they expect. A player does not need to get better at everything at once. They need to become hard to replace at one or two things, and reliable enough at the rest that a coach is not afraid to use them. That is what a per player plan is for. Alex watches first, decides what the real gap is, then spends the sessions on it instead of running a workout he could hand to anybody.

02 / THE COURT

Getting to the courts from Fort Thomas

There is no Fort Thomas court in the rotation. Alex trains at three outdoor courts and only three: Bellevue Beach Park, a court in Newport, and Swope. From most of Fort Thomas the first two are a few minutes down the hill, close enough that families come straight from school and are home before dinner.

Bring a ball, water and shoes for outdoor blacktop. Everything is open air, so a rainy week moves a session rather than cancelling the plan for the month. Work is counted in makes and reps rather than by the clock alone, and a player leaves knowing the two or three things they owe themselves before the next session. That homework is where most of the improvement actually happens.

What Fort Thomas players work on

  • 01

Getting on the floor at a deep program

Highlands carries talent at most positions. The work here targets the one skill that turns a player from the ninth man into someone the coach has to put in.

  • 02

Shooting that survives a real game

Form work against nobody is easy. Sessions push shooting into fatigue, movement and contested reps, because that is the version that shows up on a Friday night.

  • 03

    Middle school players heading up

Fort Thomas kids arrive in high school competing against strong classes. The years before that are when handle and footwork are cheapest to fix.

05 / Questions

What families in Fort Thomas ask

Do you train at a court in Fort Thomas?

No. Alex trains at three outdoor courts only: Bellevue Beach Park, a court in Newport, and Swope. Fort Thomas is on this list because the drive is short and a lot of players come from here. He will not claim a court he does not use. When you book, you get told exactly which of the three to meet at and when.

My child already plays travel ball. Is this extra?

It is different work. Travel basketball shows what a player can already do. It does not build much, because a weekend of games contains very few repetitions of any one skill. Training is where the repetitions live, plus decision making trained under pressure. Players who do both improve. Players who only play games mostly stay the same and get more tired.

How many sessions before we see a change?

Small mechanical things, like a hand position or a footwork pattern, move inside a few sessions. A shot rebuilt so it holds up in a game takes a season of steady work and daily reps between sessions. Alex will tell you which one your player is looking at after he has watched them once, rather than promising a timeline before he knows anything.
